Psychiatry and Socialism (1998)
PSYCHIATRY AND SOCIALISM (1998)
Today there are divisions in the working
class movement on psychology and the natural sciences. Some allow psychiatrists
to join the workers movement on the basis that they are medical workers.
In the 1860's Marx encountered the first
attempts to link psychology and the natural sciences. He described this link as
' amorphous' and wrong.
In the 1920's Bleuler, an Austrian, linked
schizophrenia to an imbalance in the brain's chemicals.
Since then scientists
have pursued the Holy Grail of the chemical imbalance.
The origin of Bleuler's
prognosis was dementia praecox, a disease of the brain linked with the third
stage of syphilis. Bleuler invented the category of schizophrenia, giving it
the Greek title of split consciousness'
The cult of psychiatry and its 'sacred symbol' (Szasz), schizophrenia, has laid claim to be a science.
There is no
proven chemical imbalance in the brain and we must look to social relations to
find the origin of the cult of psychiatry. The relationship between doctor and mental
health sufferer is based on oppression. Psychiatrists prey on the confused, the
depressed, single parents, people with low educational attainments, political
dissidents, the unemployed, cranks, bachelors, spinsters, the physically
disabled, malingerers, the pious, the confused, the promiscuous and especially
relatives of intrusive families. This state funded cult has no basis in the
natural sciences and is pursued for personal gain by the psychiatrists.
Psychiatrists in the Republic of Ireland
take in over £107, 000 Irish pounds from the state.
For many years, Irish mental hospitals had
the highest rate of incarceration in Western Europe. The psychiatrists are
loyally supported by their lackeys in the Community Mental Health Teams who
report back any sign of mental instability or insecurity. There is the real
danger of incarceration without trial for many thousands in our society. The
Community Psychiatric Nurses function along the lines of a thought police. The psychiatric nurses also are in regular contact with the 'clients' and chase after illusions and
unreal fears. The psychiatric hospitals function as holding centres while the
psychiatrists go about their dull but profitable business.
The police are the
best customers for the hospitals bringing in the offal of society to take their
place on the wards. Trauma victims also invariably end up here.
The legal
provisions for release are scanty and depend on the Mental Health Review
Tribunals which by common acknowledgement merely rubberstamp the subjective opinions
of the psychiatrists.
Violations of human rights and privacy are
treated with kid gloves by the courts and it is difficult to in redress.
Applicants for legal aid are put through a tedious, drawn-out system of
applying for funding to take action.
The Ministers of Health give the doctors a
carte blanche to do what they wish.
Psychiatry remains one of the
key interfaces between the middle class and the working class.
