Those who have worked in psychiatric hospitals for long periods are strong advocates of humanist knowledge and support and vouchsafe for the good offices of almost every practising doctor,but why is this? It is because of very painful memories of unnecessary suffering or death by suicide of family members. Many practising intendants know of instances where any form of confinement would have have prevented death at the hands of murderers and the criminal classes. In Ireland and other police states however, there are many clear instances of police measures,staff violence and medical cruelty directed at radicalised patients by these same hospital intendants because the named parties act under the guidance of the police.
